Madeline Kallio Facilitations

Chickadees eat out of her hands Madeline Kallio has edited books for Clarke, Irwin Publishing Company, helped create student aid programs in Ontario and the Federal Government, and worked in federal-provincial relations. She has always had an immense concern for environmental conservation.
Madeline met Martha Webber, a botanist and naturalist, who spent much of her time teaching classes to identify wild edible plants and to be aware of wildlife and its habitat.
In 1985, Ottawa Valley Field Trips was born with a mandate to introduce individuals of all ages to the natural environment and encourage personal discovery and understanding.

The company developed hands-on environmental programs for schools, including pilot projects in the Ottawa and Carleton Roman Catholic Schools to introduce the teachers to the new hands-on environmental curriculum, and organized workshops at the request of the boards of education in the area. The company worked extensively in nature interpretation with the National Capital Commission and other groups, such as Scouts Canada, Girl Guides, the Home School Association and other learning and public groups. They were pleased to be asked to organize birding excursions for world-renowned ornithologists conferencing in Ottawa to celebrate the release of the first Peregrine Falcons. In addition, Ottawa Valley Field Trips developed a backroads tour element, which provided an opportunity for exploring the quaint areas and nature on the backroads of Eastern Ontario, as well as longer trips in Ontario, Quebec and the U.S. The Wildlife Festival Committee initially requested Ottawa Valley Field Trips' participation and, for a number of years, the company organized complimentary nature walks in April as a part of the Wildlife Festival.

Madeline Kallio was asked to be a member of the Committee around 1990 and assumed the role of Coordinator in 1998 and still continues in that post.
