AWARDS FOR EXCELLENCE
IN ENVIRONMENTAL CONSERVATION 1999
Introduced in 1997 to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of National Wildlife Week, the Awards for Excellence in Environmental Conservation are presented to an adult individual, to an adult group and to a youth or youth group under 18 years whose long-term commitments to conservation of the environment have had significant impacts on wildlife in the Region. Adult individual and adult group awards were nominated from within the NCR Wildlife Festival Committee, but nominations were accepted for the Youth Award.
The Awards were presented by John Lacharity during the Opening Ceremonies and Award Presentations at the Canadian Museum of Nature. Winners received a certificate and an engraved plaque with a chickadee carved by Moose MacMillen, a member of the Outaouais Wood Carvers.
Ann Coffey receives award The adult individual chosen was Ann Coffey, whose work with school greening and environmental awareness is well known in the educational community. Previous winners were Dwight Delahunt and Elizabeth LeGeyt.

The adult group award was presented to the Baxter Conservation Area, a very interactive nature centre under the auspices of Rideau Valley Conservation, whose director, Leanne Kane, has created an exceptional facility and programs. Previous winners were the Ottawa Field-Naturalists' Club and the Fletcher Wildlife Garden.
